June 9th Meeting & Cruise
The attendance was small but we still had a good lunch and cruise. The 3rd Annual TOP OF GEORGIA All Corvette Show scheduled for June 23rd at Brasstown Bald was the topic of the day. Also discussed was the possibiltiy of two future sites for fund raising Corvette shows. We've had two contacts from area businesses who have seen our newspaper ads and are interested in the CGBRM staging a fund raising car show at their site. One is a large market in Clayton, GA and the second location is an area raceway. The newspaper ads have also brought invitations to visit with our Corvettes as a group and receive discounts for overnight stays at area cabins, hotels, and inns. View the June '07 Show pages on this website for more details on area businesses offering discounts.
This cruise was arranged to visit two locations that have contributed door prize and goody bag items to the June 23rd show. We left the Cookie Jar Restaurant and cruised to Clayton, GA to visit with Frank Lastra owner/innkeeper of the Mountain Aire Cottages and part owner of the Georgia Mountain Market located on Hwy 441 about 1/2 north of the city of Clayton. Frank invited us to consider the Georgia Mountain Market as a venue for raising funds to support a local charity F.A.I.T.H. which servers the same functions as our local charity S.A.F.E. Both organizations provide assistance in abused family emergencies. The Georgia Mountain Market is an old shirt factory that is being converted to a multi-use market with 75,000 square feet of indoor space. Plans are to have a 40,000 sq. ft. indoor market of individual booths that are open each Friday - Sunday, another area of 15,000 sq. ft. of antiques that is open 7 days a week, and an additional 15,000 sq. ft. that will house antique vehicles.
We left the Georgia Mountain Market and traveled Hwy 441N about 5 miles to the York House Inn in Rabun Gap. There we met Victoria Phillips and she took us on a tour of this magnificent bed and breakfast inn that abounds with history. This beautiful, old house is on the National Historic Registry and shows the charm of the older structures. The large spruce trees surround the house that has a variety of room decors with a rocking chair porch. The original structure in the basement reveals an old servants quarters that has large inlayed stones and beams that support the origianl structure. This is a wonderful place to escape for a few days or a weekend. When you call please tell Victoria that you are a member of the CGBRM.
